Fiji has very few true overwater bungalows. Two resorts have bures built on stilts over a lagoon: Likuliku Lagoon Resort on Malolo Island in the Mamanucas, and Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay on the main island, Viti Levu. A few others offer something close, such as floating bures, lagoon-edge bures with ladders into the water, or a single overwater villa.
Inventory is tiny compared with Tahiti or the Maldives, so these rooms sell out early. Here is each option, how they differ and how to choose.
How Fiji differs from Tahiti-style overwater villas
In Bora Bora and the other Tahiti islands, the overwater bungalow is the standard luxury room. Many resorts have long piers lined with dozens of them, and travellers often spend their whole stay over the water. Fiji works differently:
- Very small numbers. Each Fiji resort has a handful of overwater units, not whole villages of them. That means privacy, but also limited dates.
- Beachfront is the Fijian signature. Most of Fiji's top rooms are freestanding beachfront bures and pool villas set in gardens on the sand. Overwater is the exception.
- Mixed-age resorts. Several overwater sections are adults-only even when the rest of the resort welcomes families.
- Easy pairing. Because transfers from Nadi are short, many couples spend two or three nights over the water and the rest of the trip somewhere else.
For a broader look at the two destinations, see Fiji vs Bora Bora.
Likuliku Lagoon Resort, Malolo Island
Likuliku calls its rooms Fiji's first and only authentic over-water bures. There are just ten. They sit on the edge of a fringing reef in a protected marine sanctuary and are built in traditional style with natural materials. Each bure is about 91 m² (980 ft²), with a king bed (two can be set up as twins), a separate bathing pavilion with a deep stone tub, a deck with sun loungers, and lagoon views. The whole resort is adults-only.
Getting there is simple. The resort is about 25 km from Nadi International Airport. South Sea Cruises catamarans leave Denarau Marina several times a day, and the afternoon departure runs direct in about 55 minutes. Private water taxis and helicopter transfers are also available. Times and fares change, so confirm them on the resort's transfers page when you book. The resort notes these bures are always in high demand. For school-holiday or Christmas dates, book far ahead.
Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay, Viti Levu

Momi Bay is the only option on the mainland, which makes it the easiest overwater stay to reach. The resort has 250 rooms, including 114 suites. Its overwater bures are adults-only and have high vaulted ceilings, private decks, freestanding tubs and a staircase down into the lagoon. Tour operator listings put the overwater count at 22 and the drive from Nadi airport at about 45 minutes. Confirm current room numbers and transfer timing when booking.
Momi Bay suits travellers who want the overwater experience without a boat or seaplane transfer. It also works for groups where some guests stay in land rooms. The rest of the resort is family-friendly, with a kids' club and several pools, but the overwater section itself is for adults.
Floating and lagoon-edge alternatives
Koro Sun Resort, Vanua Levu
Near Savusavu, Koro Sun's Edgewater Lagoon includes Floating Bures, which the resort calls Fiji's only floating accommodation. They are adults-only (16 and over), about 380 ft², and float in the resort's protected marina. Each has a king bed, a private deck and a two-person kayak, so you can snorkel and paddle straight from your door. The adults-only Edgewater Bures nearby have elevated porches with ladders into the lagoon. The family-friendly Edgewater Villas sit partly over the water, with ocean access from the deck at high tide.
Musket Cove Island Resort, Malolo Lailai
Musket Cove has six Lagoon Bures, which it describes as overwater bures along an inland canal. They are bright, open-plan and good value compared with the stilted options, but you are over a calm canal, not the open lagoon and reef.
COMO Laucala Island
This private-island resort in northern Fiji includes one villa elevated over the lagoon with its own pool, among its larger estate-style villas. It is very much a top-tier, enquire-direct property, so ask the resort about availability.

How to choose and book
- Decide how much time you want over water. Two to four nights is a common split. The rest can be a beachfront bure, which is often more spacious for the price.
- Match the setting to your plans. Likuliku gives you reef snorkelling and a quiet island. Momi Bay gives you the mainland and day trips. Koro Sun suits paddlers and travellers who want a remote rainforest coast.
- Check tides and access. Ask whether deck ladders reach swimmable water at all tides, and whether the snorkelling is right below you or a short swim away.
- Book early for peak dates. With so few units, July, August and the Christmas period fill first.
- Bundle transfers. Island arrivals depend on catamaran, seaplane or helicopter timing, so confirm transfers at the same time as the room.

Planning notes
Shortlist one stilted option (Likuliku or Momi Bay) and one floating or lagoon-edge option. Then check both for your dates before you lock in flights. Rates change by season and room category, so always check current rates directly or through us. Far & Away Adventures can hold the overwater nights and build the rest of the trip around them.
Frequently asked questions
How many overwater bures does Fiji have?
Only a few dozen across the whole country. Likuliku has ten and Momi Bay has around twenty, plus a small number of floating or partly-overwater options elsewhere.
Can families stay in a Fiji overwater bungalow?
The stilted overwater bures at Likuliku and Momi Bay are adults-only. Families can look at Koro Sun's Edgewater Villas, which sit partly over the water, or at beachfront family bures.
Is an overwater bure better than a beachfront bure?
Not always. Beachfront bures are often larger and step straight onto sand. Overwater bures give you the lagoon beneath your deck. Many couples book a few nights of each.
