5-Day Fiji Itinerary: Two Plans for a Short Break

Fiji island and ocean travel scene

Five days in Fiji works best with four nights and no more than one change of hotel. If rest is the goal, spend all four nights at one Mamanuca island resort, a short boat or helicopter ride from Nadi. If you want some culture and sightseeing as well, spend two nights around Nadi or Denarau and two on an island. Both plans below assume an early-morning arrival and a late-evening departure, which is the usual pattern for flights from North America.

A short trip doesn't leave room for the Yasawas, Taveuni or the Coral Coast as well. Those deserve a longer visit; our longer Fiji itinerary shows how they fit together.

Plan A, day 1: straight to the island

Flights from North America usually land in Nadi early in the morning. You have three ways to reach a Mamanuca resort, described on Likuliku Lagoon Resort's transfer page as typical of the area:

  • Scheduled catamaran from Port Denarau, about 20 minutes by road from the airport. The cheapest option, but morning sailings stop at several islands.
  • Water taxi from Port Denarau, private or shared, which suits arrival times that miss the catamaran.
  • Helicopter from beside the airport. Daylight only, with weight limits, and the fastest way to start the holiday.

Since island check-in is usually mid-afternoon, either pre-book the room from the night before or plan a slow morning: breakfast at the resort, a swim and a nap in a lounger. Don't schedule anything on day one beyond dinner.

Plan A, days 2 to 5: settle in

Fiji Travel Pro travel experience
  1. Day 2: the reef. Snorkel the house reef in the morning, when the water is usually calmest. Many resorts include kayaks and paddleboards; take one out in the late afternoon.
  2. Day 3: a boat day. Join a resort trip to a sandbank, a snorkel site or a nearby island, or book a dive if you are certified. Ask which night the resort holds its Fijian night with a meke dance and lovo feast, and plan around it.
  3. Day 4: your choice. A spa treatment, a village visit if the resort offers one, or simply a day off. This is the day most couples are glad they didn't try to move hotels.
  4. Day 5: back to the mainland. Take an afternoon boat or helicopter to Nadi or Denarau, then dinner before an evening check-in at the airport. A day room at a Denarau hotel makes the gap comfortable.

Our Mamanuca Islands guide compares the islands and which types of resort suit couples, families and divers.

Plan B, days 1 and 2: Nadi and Denarau

Stay two nights on Denarau Island or around Nadi. Pre-book the room from the night before so you can sleep on arrival.

Day 1: rest, swim and have an easy lunch. In the evening, head to Port Denarau, where Tourism Fiji lists a free hour-long Fijian dance show most evenings at 6:30 pm, except Sundays.

Day 2 is your culture and sightseeing day. Pick one of these, as each takes a half-day or more:

  • Sabeto valley: the Garden of the Sleeping Giant, started by actor Raymond Burr and known for more than 2,000 orchids, then the Sabeto mud pools, open daily from 9 am to 5 pm according to Tourism Fiji's Nadi guide. Most sightseeing tours combine the two.
  • A lovo cooking class: the five-hour Vavavi experience near Wailoaloa Beach includes a market visit while your feast cooks in the earth oven.
  • Nadi town: the produce market, the handicraft centre and Indo-Fijian food for lunch. A guided walking tour makes it easier on a first visit.

Our Nadi guide has more on the town and nearby attractions.

Plan B, days 3 to 5: island time

Day 3: take a morning boat from Port Denarau to a Mamanuca island resort. A direct sailing or water taxi saves time, and arriving by lunch gives you a full afternoon on the beach.

Day 4: snorkel the reef, paddle a kayak, or join a resort boat trip. If your island resort holds its Fijian night during your stay, it is worth arranging dinner around it.

Day 5: enjoy a final morning swim, then return to the mainland in the afternoon. Allow plenty of margin between the boat's arrival at Port Denarau and airport check-in, as weather can delay sea transfers.

Adapting the plans for your group

  • Couples and honeymooners: Plan A at an adults-only resort gives the quietest trip. Add a private dinner on the beach or a sunset paddle on day 4.
  • Families: choose a resort with a kids' club and a shallow, sandy lagoon. In Plan B, Denarau is the easier mainland base, with a waterpark, mini golf and the Bula Bus loop between hotels.
  • Divers: schedule dives early in the stay, on days 2 or 3, so there is a full day between your last dive and the flight home. Your dive operator will confirm the minimum surface interval before flying.
  • Travellers with mobility needs: ask about jetty or beach landings before booking, since some islands are reached by stepping off a small boat into shallow water.

Timing tips for a five-day trip

  • Book transfers with your resort. They know the boat times and will hold your place if a flight is delayed.
  • Pick a nearer island. On a short break, resorts closer to Port Denarau mean less time on the water and more on the beach.
  • Use the late flight. Flights home often leave late in the evening, so a day room or late check-out turns the last day into a real holiday day.
  • Season matters. From November to April, showers and the occasional cyclone can disrupt boats; leave the last day's transfer early and buy travel insurance.
  • Stay hydrated. Long-haul flights and tropical heat combine quickly; coconut water and fresh juice are easy to find at every resort.

Planning notes

Decide first whether this trip is about rest or variety, then choose Plan A or Plan B and book the first night from the night before your arrival. If you can add even two more nights, a second island or the Coral Coast becomes realistic. We can match the resort, transfers and flight times for either plan when you plan with us.

Frequently asked questions

Is five days enough for Fiji?

It is enough for a restful island break or a short taste of Nadi plus one island. It is not enough to add the Yasawas, Taveuni or the Coral Coast without spending much of the trip in transit.

Can I visit an island on a day trip instead of staying there?

Yes. Day cruises from Port Denarau visit several Mamanuca islands, so Plan B travellers on a tighter budget can stay on the mainland all four nights and take one day trip.

Which plan suits families?

Plan A usually suits families with young children better, because there is only one change of hotel and the resort's pools and kids' activities fill the days.
