Ten days in Fiji is enough for two bases without feeling rushed: four nights on the Coral Coast of Viti Levu, then four or five nights on one island in the Mamanuca or Yasawa groups, finishing near Nadi for an easy departure. Keeping it to two bases means only one road transfer and one boat trip, with full days in between where nothing needs to be packed.

Why two bases, not four

Many first-time plans try to fit in three or four islands. On paper it looks efficient; in reality every move costs half a day of checkout, waiting, transfer and check-in. Fiji's boats run on fixed schedules: the Yasawa Flyer, for example, leaves Port Denarau each morning around 8:45 am and works its way north through the islands before returning in the evening (Yasawa Adventures timetable). Tourism Fiji puts the trip from Port Denarau to the top of the Yasawa chain at two to five hours depending on where you get off.

Two bases give you a mainland half, with drives, culture and day trips, and an island half that is mostly swimming, snorkelling and doing very little. If you want more island variety, our island-hopping guide explains how to add a third stop.

Days 1 to 4: arrive and settle on the Coral Coast

Day 1: Arrive Nadi, transfer south. The Fiji Airways nonstop from Vancouver lands in Nadi early in the morning. Tourism Fiji puts the Coral Coast at 30 minutes to two hours by road from the airport, depending on which resort you choose. Book an early check-in or a day room if you can, then do nothing more ambitious than the pool.

Day 2: Rest and the reef. Spend the morning snorkelling the resort lagoon at high tide. Afternoon nap, early dinner. The first full day is for adjusting to the time change.

Day 3: Sigatoka day. Visit the Sigatoka Sand Dunes National Park, Fiji's first national park, about ten minutes west of Sigatoka town. Two walking trails take roughly one or two hours; go early, as there's little shade and the midday heat is intense. Check current opening hours at the visitor centre. Afterwards, browse Sigatoka market for fresh fruit, or book the Sigatoka River Safari jet boat trip upriver to a village.

Day 4: Families or nature lovers' choice. Kula WILD Adventure Park has native birds and reptiles, forest boardwalks and a jungle waterslide. Ecotrax electric-assisted rail bikes follow train tracks through forest and villages to a remote beach with fresh fruit and coconut water. Or simply stay put. Our Coral Coast guide compares resort areas along the coast.

Day 5: transfer to the islands

Fiji island and ocean travel scene

This is your one long travel day. Drive back towards Nadi to Port Denarau Marina for a morning boat. Most Coral Coast resorts are far enough away that you'll need an early start for the Yasawa Flyer's morning departure, and the check-in time is about 30 minutes before sailing. Mamanuca resorts are closer to Port Denarau, and transfer options vary by resort, so check the times when you book.

Two practical points: the Yasawas have very limited shops and banking, with Tourism Fiji noting that the only independent supermarket, restaurant and ATM in the group is at Nanuya Island Resort, so stock up at Port Denarau. And most Yasawa resorts require a meal plan on top of the room rate, so budget for it.

Days 6 to 9: island time

Choose your island by what you want to do:

If you wantConsiderWhy
Short transfer, calm lagoonMamanuca IslandsClose to Port Denarau, sheltered by a barrier reef, many resorts
Rugged scenery, quieter baysYasawa IslandsHigh grassy peaks, smaller resorts, village visits
Manta raysCentral YasawasManta season is May to October around a channel in the middle of the chain
CavesNorthern YasawasHome of the Sawa-i-Lau caves

A balanced island rhythm:

  • Day 6: Snorkel the house reef, learn where the currents run, and book activities.
  • Day 7: Headline excursion: manta snorkel in season, a cave trip, a dive or a boat trip to a sandbar.
  • Day 8: Village visit or guided summit walk in the morning, free afternoon.
  • Day 9: A genuinely empty day. Kayak, read, swim. This is the day guests remember.

Tourism Fiji advises against travelling between islands in small fibreglass boats at night or in rough weather, so stick to scheduled transfers if conditions turn.

Day 10: return and depart

The Fiji Airways flight to Vancouver leaves Nadi in the evening, around 10 pm on the published schedule, so you have most of the final day. Take the morning or midday boat back to Port Denarau, then use a day room on Denarau or near the airport for a shower and rest before the flight. Leave a generous buffer: if weather delays your boat, you want hours in hand, not minutes. Some travellers prefer a final night on Denarau instead and spend Day 10 at the marina and shops.

When to run this itinerary

The route works year-round, but the season changes the details. From May to October, Tourism Fiji describes slightly cooler, drier weather, and this is also manta season in the Yasawas, which makes it the best window if Day 7 is built around mantas. From November to April it is warmer and more humid, with more rain and the possibility of tropical cyclones, so boat days are more likely to shift. In those months, keep Day 5 and Day 10 flexible, choose an island with a shorter transfer, and make sure your insurance covers weather disruption. School-holiday periods in Australia and New Zealand fill resorts early, so book well ahead if your dates overlap.

Swaps and variations

  • Honeymooners: swap the Coral Coast for a second, adults-only island and fly by seaplane between them if the budget allows.
  • Families with young children: choose a Coral Coast resort with a kids club and a Mamanuca island with a short boat transfer.
  • Divers: replace the island half with Taveuni and the Somosomo Strait, reached by a domestic flight.
  • Shorter trip: our 7-day Fiji itinerary condenses this into one week.

Planning notes

Lock in your island resort and transfer first, because boat schedules shape everything else, then build the Coral Coast nights around them. In the November to April wet season, keep the final night close to Nadi to protect your flight. If you'd like us to match resorts and transfers to your dates, we can draft the whole route for you.

Frequently asked questions

Is 10 days in Fiji too long?

Not if you split it across two bases. Many travellers find the island half goes faster than expected, and the time on the ground justifies the long-haul flight.

Do I need a car for this itinerary?

No. Resort transfers cover the Coral Coast and Port Denarau, and boats handle the islands. A rental car only helps if you want to explore the Coral Coast independently.

Can I do the islands first and the Coral Coast second?

Yes. Some travellers prefer to finish on the mainland so their last night is closer to the airport, which also protects against weather-delayed boats.
