Denarau Island Guide: Beyond the Resorts

Denarau Island is a purpose-built resort area joined to Viti Levu by a short causeway, about 20 minutes by road from Nadi International Airport. Beyond the big resorts it has Port Denarau Marina (the main departure point for Mamanuca and Yasawa boats), a shopping and dining complex, a championship golf course, a waterpark and a waterfront walkway. It works best as a short, convenient base at the start or end of a trip, or for families who want facilities over seclusion.

How Denarau is laid out

Denarau is compact. A ring of large resorts lines the beachfront, including the Sheraton, Sofitel, Radisson Blu, Hilton and Wyndham properties, with apartment-style options such as The Palms and The Terraces behind them. The golf course sits inland behind the resorts, and Port Denarau Marina with its shopping centre sits on the river side, closest to the causeway.

Because everything is within a few kilometres, you don't need a car. Most visitors use three ways of getting around:

  • The Bula Bus: a hop-on, hop-off loop linking the resorts and Port Denarau. The marina's visitor information describes it running roughly every 15 minutes from early morning until late evening, with a day pass and a lower child fare. Check the current fare at your hotel desk.
  • Walking: a waterfront path connects many of the resorts along the beach. Walking from one end to the other takes roughly 20 to 30 minutes.
  • Taxis: easy to find at resort entrances and the marina, and the simplest way into Nadi town or back to the airport.

There are only a few footpaths away from the beachfront, so for the marina we suggest the bus rather than walking along the roads in the midday heat.

Port Denarau Marina: more than a ferry terminal

Most travellers first see the marina at 7 a.m. with a ferry ticket in hand, but it's worth returning when you aren't rushing for a boat. It adjoins the largest retail and restaurant complex in the Nadi area, with a supermarket, pharmacy, doctor's clinic, bank, currency exchange, souvenir and clothing shops, and a wide choice of cafés and restaurants.

Useful things to know:

  • Island day trips to the Mamanuca and Yasawa islands leave from here, as do island resort transfers, water taxis, fishing charters and dive trips.
  • Free cultural show: according to Tourism Fiji, Port Denarau hosts an hour-long Fijian dance performance most evenings at 6:30 pm (not Sundays). Arrive a little early for a seat.
  • Stocking up: the supermarket is the best place before a stay on an outer island, where shop prices are higher and choice is limited. Reef-safe sunscreen, snacks for kids and a reusable water bottle are the usual buys.
  • Dinner cruises on Nadi Bay depart from the marina several evenings a week, with hotel pick-ups included.

Things to do with kids on Denarau

Fiji Travel Pro travel experience

Denarau is one of the easiest places in Fiji for younger children, because the activities are close together and the resorts are set up for families. For ideas across the rest of the country, see our family activities guide.

  • Big Bula Waterpark: slides for a range of ages, obstacle courses and a gated area for toddlers. It's a good half-day when the kids want a break from the hotel pool.
  • Mini golf and bungee trampoline at the Denarau Golf & Racquet Club, a low-cost hour that works well in the late afternoon.
  • Resort kids' clubs: most of the large resorts run them, and the Sofitel has a dedicated teen zone for ages 12 to 16. Check age ranges and whether the club is included or charged.
  • Cultural nights: many Denarau resorts hold a Fijian evening with a meke dance and a lovo earth-oven meal, which children usually enjoy more than adults expect.
  • A half-day island trip: an easy boat ride to a Mamanuca island beach gives kids white sand and snorkelling without a full day away.

Golf, tennis and active time

The Denarau Golf & Racquet Club has an 18-hole, par-72 course of about 7,150 yards, designed by Eiichi Motobashi, with water carries on its par threes. Clubs, shoes and carts can be rented, and the club runs lessons and daily clinics, which makes it easy for occasional golfers who don't travel with their own set.

The racquet side offers tennis lessons, clinics for adults and juniors, social doubles and equipment rental. Book tee times and courts early in the morning; by late morning the heat makes both hard going.

For a gentler start to the day, the beachfront walk at sunrise is the coolest and quietest time on the island. If you want kayaks or paddleboards, ask your resort what it lends to guests and what's charged.

Is Denarau the right base for you?

Denarau has a clear role in a Fiji trip, and it isn't the same role as a Mamanuca island resort. Here is how we advise clients:

Denarau works well when...Look elsewhere when...
You land on an early-morning flight and want a short transfer and a poolWhite sand and snorkelling off the beach are the priority
You need a night before an early international departureYou want a quiet, small-resort feel
You're travelling with young children who need varietyYou'd rather be on the water every day without a boat ride
You want to take day trips to several islands from one hotelYou want to see village life or rainforest on your doorstep
Some of your group golf or want shops and restaurant choiceThe trip is a honeymoon focused on privacy

Tourism Fiji itself sends visitors to the outer islands for white-sand beaches and clear water. Denarau's beachfront is pleasant for walking and sunsets, but most guests swim in the resort pools. That's why we usually suggest one to three nights on Denarau combined with a longer island stay. Our Nadi guide covers the town side of the area, and the Viti Levu page explains how Denarau fits with the Coral Coast and Pacific Harbour if you want to stay on the mainland.

Planning notes

Pick your Denarau hotel by its position: resorts closer to the marina make early ferry departures easier, while those at the far end of the beachfront are quieter. If you're taking a day trip, book it for your second day rather than the morning you land. Pack a light rain layer for the wetter months, and plan time indoors during the hottest hours. If you'd like Denarau built into a wider itinerary with island time, we can plan the whole sequence with you.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a rental car on Denarau?

No. The Bula Bus, the waterfront path and taxis cover the island. A car is only worth it if you plan to drive the Coral Coast or into the highlands.

Can I visit Denarau if I'm staying in Nadi town?

Yes. Taxis make the trip in a few minutes, and local buses link Denarau with the Nadi bus station.

How early should I get to Port Denarau for an island boat?

Check-in times vary by operator, so confirm the time on your ticket and allow for morning traffic on the causeway.
